Intermittent operation is necessary for smartphone sensing in outdoor environments. However, the timer circuit consumes variable energy in the battery and shorten the battery life. In this research, we propose a remote boot trigger for Android smartphones using microwave power transfer whose receiver consists of a passive circuit only. This system exploits the feature of Android smartphones to boot up automatically when connected to a charger. We also propose a low-power sensing method exploiting the Linux kernel instead of the Android OS to drastically reduce the power overhead.
